The Stylists / Sissy Sainte-Marie
Meet Sissy Sainte-Marie of The Polyamorous Affair and owner of Sainte-Marie Vintage .
I met Sissy a couple of months ago when I took her photo for HiStyley at The Farmers Market, I had to wait her out while she was finishing up her shopping at one of the stores because I really wanted to take her photo. I loved what she was wearing and I thought she might be Danish, turned out she’s not, but she had just gotten back from Denmark and Berlin, where she lived for a couple of years.
Describe your style
I usually like to look like a Cissy doll dressed as a fortune teller in real life and an elfin disco-mystic white witch on stage. But lately I have an urge to blend in a little more while still being a thriftonista glamour-puss. I almost always wear animal print, neutrals and something shiny. I love cocoon capes/panchos/shawls, metallics, fringe, diaphanous fabrics, jumpsuits, high waisted harem pants, and lots of black (although lately I’ve been feeling drawn to pastels.) Oh, yeah, and I wear my floppy hat almost everyday.
What do you treasure most in your closet?
My cat who loves to sleep in the hamper in there and my Tata Christiane dress.
Who is your favorite designer?
I can’t think of just one. I always love Stella McCartney, Hannah MacGibbon, Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen (R.I.P) and the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte.
Who’s closet would you raid?
Catherine Baba!!!
Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence?
To be honest street style blogs have been a positive influence for me. When I was younger I’d either play it too safe or be way too kooky (not in a good way) and I was in need of some education and rules. Fashion blogs taught me to just kinda do as I’m told but at the same time filter trends through my own voice. I can never be a sheep but I can’t carry off full-on eccentric either. Also the time my husband and I were nomads moving around Europe and living out of a suitcase for a year forced me to be smarter about my wardrobe. I couldn’t have an endless accumulation of stuff found on a whim and be a total shapeshifter. I had the opportunity to discover what I liked most and what suited me and what would become a mainstay in my closet.
Favorite places to shop in LA?
I love window shopping at Opening Ceremony, New High Mart & Ten Over Six and Weltenbuerger and Lemon Frog for vintage shopping on the eastside. But I’m a cheapskate so I mostly shop thrift and second hand like Wasteland. I wish they’d open a Weekday and a Topshop in this town!
